Former U.S. Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders, delivered a speech on the first day of the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Monday night.

In an impassioned plea to supporters, the onetime presidential hopeful called the idea of a Donald Trump re-election "unimaginable" and urged his supporters to support Democratic candidate Joe Biden, lest they risk all the progress of their movement be washed away in another four years of a Trump administration.

"The future of our democracy is at stake," Sanders said. "The future of our economy is at stake. The future of our planet is at stake."

The race for the White House is entering the home stretch, with Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden being formally nominated at their parties' national conventions this month.

The Democratic event, which runs from Aug. 17- 20, was originally scheduled to take place mid-July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It has been dramatically scaled back and is expected to be almost entirely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 U.S. presidential election will take place on Nov. 3.
