Duke of Cambridge's pot-shot at Bezos: Focus on fixing Earth instead of space race

Telegraph, 14 Oct 2021
The Duke of Cambridge has warned that the “world’s greatest brains” should focus on repairing the planet rather than “trying to find the next place to go and live”.

His comments came hours after Jeff Bezos, the billionaire Amazon tycoon, sent Star Trek's William Shatner into space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket.

Shatner, 90, stepped out of the space capsule in a West Texas desert having become the oldest human to leave Earth's atmosphere, declaring the experience as “extraordinary” and “profound” while adding: “Everybody in the world needs to do this.”

Prince William, 39, was apparently less dazzled, suggesting that the vulnerable planet was a much more worthy cause of time and investment.

Speaking to BBC Newscast on BBC Sounds, ahead of the inaugural Earthshot Prize award ceremony on Sunday, he said: “We need some of the world’s greatest brains and minds fixed on trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live.”
