Francesco Sisci, the famous Italian scholar and former cultural counselor at the Italian Embassy in China, pointed out that Washington explicitly told Italy that if it uses Chinese 5G, the U.S. would consider withdrawing Italy from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) agreement, which means that Italy would need to increase spending on national defense and domestic security. He said that as long as the U.S. does not agree, it will be impossible for Italian companies to use Chinese 5G technology.
