Renee Korchinski, the sister of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, said her family was “totally disgusted” with the findings of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) report, which ultimately determined that police would not face charges as a result of the incident which ended in Regis' death.

Regis Korchinski-Paquet, 29, fell to her death while trying to sidestep onto a neighbour’s balcony, said a report released Wednesday by Ontario’s police watchdog, which concludes there are no grounds to charge officers who were in her home at the time. The lengthy report from the Special Investigations Unit notes that Korchinski-Paquet’s death sparked “important conversations” about the ways in which police interact with Black and Indigenous people, but says there was no evidence of police wrongdoing or “overt” racism in the incident itself.

Knia Singh, the lawyer for the Korchinski family, also thanked people for their support before chants of “say her name” and “not another Black life” erupted from people who had gathered to hear them speak.

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer spoke to the media on Wednesday, calling the case of Korchinski-Paquet a “no win” scenario and saying that while the Special Investigations Unit cleared his officers, Korchinski-Paquet still lost her life.

Ramer said the public needed to understand “all the dimensions” in the case, and that the service would conduct its own review into the incident. He said it would include an “impartial, unbiased review” of policies and they are discussing having a mental health professional assist in the review.
