Feds to replace Canada’s broad COVID-19 benefits with “targeted” supports

CA, 22 Oct 2021
The federal government is pulling the plug on several COVID-19 support programs starting Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced Thursday, as she reminded Canadians the measures were always meant to be temporary.

Ottawa has revealed what will replace the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS), which expire Oct. 23.

The two targeted benefits are called the Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program, the Hardest-Hit Business Recovery Program and the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit.

Global’s David Akin explains how the plans compare, who can apply and the timeline for this round of financial aid.
