The popularity of fencing has had a boost in Hong Kong after the city’s own Edgar Cheung Ka-long won the men’s individual foil gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on July 26, 2021. Hong Kong's first Olympic gold in 25 years, and the only top Games medal since the city’s 1997 handover, also sparked a wave of euphoria among Hongkongers. The victory was a much needed dose of good news for Hong Kong, after the chaos of recent anti-government protests, the imposition of a national security law and challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
