Taiwan and Palau kicked off Asia’s first quarantine-free “travel bubble” on April 1, 2021. The first group of around 100 tourists from Taiwan boarded a Boeing 737-800 at Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport before setting off for the tourism-dependent Micronesian island archipelago. Among the passengers was Palau President Surangel Whipps Jnr, who had come to Taiwan to help launch the scheme. While the travellers will not need to go into quarantine, precautionary measures will remain in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Passengers must present proof of a negative coronavirus test before boarding flights, and they have to travel in groups with limited direct contact with local people while they are abroad.
