George Floyd protests: Demonstrators in Senegal take a knee in solidarity with U.S. protests
CA, 10 Jun 2020
Senegalese in Dakar joined the worldwide protests to denounce police violence and remember George Floyd, who was buried in Houston, U.S. on Tuesday.
A small number of demonstrators knelt at the site designated for the giant monument of Goree, an island that houses a memorial to the Atlantic slave trade and which former U.S. President Barack Obama visited in 2013.
The death of George Floyd two weeks ago in police custody has sparked worldwide protests against racism.
A Senegalese man born in Minneapolis, Mohamedou Cisse, was at the protest. The 26-year-old said he wished he was amongst the mourners in Houston but said "being here and doing what I can do is still equal".
