George Floyd's brother makes impassioned plea for UN probe into U.S. racism, police violence

CA, 18 Jun 2020
The brother of the late George Floyd made a heartfelt plea to the top U.N. human rights body on Wednesday during a landmark debate on system racism in the United States, urging an investigation into police brutality and racial discrimination in America, including "the violence used against peaceful protesters."

"The way you saw my brother tortured and murdered on camera is the way Black people are treated by police in America," Philonise Floyd, speaking via video to the Human Rights Council in Geneva of his brother's death in Minneapolis police custody last month.

The urgent debate, convened at the request of African countries which are seeking a U.N. inquiry into abuses, is due to continue on Thursday. The United States quit the Council two years ago and does not attend debates.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn., on Memorial Day. Floyd died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. Floyd’s death sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality.
