Global National: April 5, 2021 | Rising COVID-19 hospitalizations among younger Canadians
CA, 06 Apr 2021
On this episode of Global National: The medical officers of health for Toronto, Peel Region and Ottawa have sent a letter to Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams requesting that the provincial government implement a provincewide stay-at-home order amid the third wave of COVID-19. In Ontario and across much of the country, a younger demographic is getting sick. Abigail Bimman has more.
The highly transmissible COVID-19 variants are especially a major problem in British Columbia and Alberta. As Heather Yourex-West reports, health officials are warning Canadians — even those who have been vaccinated — about the serious risks.
And despite rampant cases of COVID-19 in much of Europe, the U.K. is emerging from nearly four months in lockdown. As Crystal Goomansingh explains, the government is assuring people they won’t need a “vaccine passport” to enjoy their freedom.
Plus, Jackson Proskow has more from the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, including the testimony of the city’s police chief, which may be critical to the prosecutor's case.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women, and economists and labour experts want the upcoming Canadian federal budget to have support programs for women workers. Anne Gaviola reports.
Also, the Vancouver Canucks are at the centre of a COVID-19 outbreak. The NHL insists the season isn’t over for the team, but as Eric Sorensen reports, the cases are still throwing a wrench into the schedule.
