Global National: March 28, 2021 | Race in Canada to boost vaccine rates as variant cases rise
CA, 29 Mar 2021
In our top story: 1.2 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Hamilton, Ontario today. It’s the beginning of an accelerated vaccination campaign. Just a few weeks ago, delays from the pharmaceutical companies put Canada’s inoculation drive on pause. But that boost of vaccines is in a race against the variants that are starting to dominate in Canada. Cases are rising in just about every region, the need for a more rapid rollout is greater than ever.
A memorial is growing outside a library in British Columbia. It’s where an unfathomable crime took place. A man with a knife stabbed seven people at random and a woman in her 20s was killed. The suspect has been charged with murder. As Andrea Macpherson reports, he was known to police.
Police in Halifax are investigating a disturbing incident that took place on Friday. Video has surfaced that appears to show an officer pointing his firearm at a Black man, whose arms are raised above his head. It’s what the officer says that is disturbing to the Black community. Elizabeth McSheffrey has the latest on this developing story — and a warning, this video may be disturbing to some viewers.
In Quebec, friends and family said goodbye to a Montreal woman today, but they are also demanding answers about her death. The 44-year-old mother of three died in hospital earlier this month, but not before posting a video criticizing how hospital staff treated her. She claimed she was injected with Penicillin despite telling doctors and nurses she was allergic to the drug. As Mike Armstrong explains, Quebec’s coroner is now investigating.
In the U.S., the death toll from mass shootings in March reached 18 last week when 10 were killed at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. Eight others died in the violent attacks on massage parlours in Atlanta, Georgia. Both of the suspects used weapons they had purchased legally and that’s renewed calls for lawmakers to pass stricter gun control laws. As members of Congress gear up for a familiar fight, Jennifer Johnson looks at the new battle lines being drawn.
There is an urgency to speed up vaccinations, but doses are in short supply. So the world is watching an experiment taking place in the U.K. Scientists there have launched a trial to see if it’s safe to mix and match vaccines that require two shots. As Crystal Goomansingh explains, it’s been done successfully with other vaccines.
Correcting the wrongs of the past begins with acknowledging them. One city in the U.S. is going a step further. Evanston, Illinois has decided to pay reparations to Black residents who faced decades of discriminatory housing policies. As Jackson Proskow reports, it’s the beginning of a national movement in the U.S. by giving back the opportunities that were denied for so long.
