Greek migrant camp in ruins following fires, thousands left without shelter
CA, 11 Sep 2020
Migrants were stranded in the streets without shelter Thursday on the Greek island of Lesbos, after fires razed their camp to the ground.
Many were seen crowded together outside food trucks waiting for packages to be handed out.
"One night the fire come, my room - it's nothing, like this," said Lela from Iraq as she gestured with her hand that her room had been flattened by the blaze.
About 12,500 people had lived in the Moria camp. Tuesday night's inferno reduced it to a mass of charred steel and melted tent tarpaulin.
A second fire broke out on Wednesday night, leaving many more in need of emergency shelter.
The government said it would take days to find housing. A migration ministry official said authorities were searching for a location on the island to set up thousands of tents for the migrants, while a passenger ferry had also arrived to provide shelter.
Greek authorities also transferred more than 400 unaccompanied children and teenagers to the mainland in the early hours of Thursday on three chartered flights.
