Haj: Pilgrims keep distance at usually-crowded Stone the Devil ritual

CA, 01 Aug 2020
Muslim pilgrims took part on Friday in the traditional symbolic Stoning of the Devil ritual in Saudi Arabia as part of Haj. The pilgrims maintained social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic in a ritual that normally sees millions of worshippers from all over the world shoulder to shoulder.

Clad in white robes, which denotes a state of purity, and face masks, men and women cast their stones while closely monitored by health professionals. The pilgrims also stood apart on yellow markers marking a safe social distance.

They will return over the next two days for more stoning before going back to Mecca to pray at the Grand Mosque at the end of Haj.
