When Wong Yee-nga’s flat was broken into and ransacked in July 2019, the 82-year-old woman was left distraught that she spent more than a year sleeping at 24-hour McDonald’s branches. When the Hong Kong government banned overnight dine-in services at restaurants because of the coronavirus pandemic, she ended up spending nights in parks or on the street. But the Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command stepped in to help her move back home. While much work remains to be done in Wong’s flat despite months of clean-up, she is also grappling with a bigger problem: loneliness.
