The election to decide the next leader of Hong Kong has been delayed until May to focus all efforts on fighting the pandemic. The current chief executive, Carrie Lam, cited the use of the Emergency Ordinance to trigger the postponement. This as authorities confirmed on February 17, 2022, that they were considering a citywide universal testing scheme, amid an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases. The announcement followed media reports that the government planned to screen up to 1 million people daily, starting in March.
