Hong Kong: China attacks Canada's, UK's response to security law; calls for fairness on Huawei

CA, 06 Jul 2020
China's foreign ministry warned on Monday that it reserved the right to take additional action in response to Canada suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong, due to the new national security legislation imposed on the semi-autonomous region by China. Chinese government spokesman Zhao Lijian said the move violates the basic principles of international law and relations.

China's ambassador to the U.K., Liu Xiaoming, accused the U.K. of "gross interference" on Monday, and of making irresponsible remarks, regarding Beijing's introduction of a new national security legislation in Hong Kong. Britain said the imposition of the law was a violation of the 1984 Joint Declaration, and that London would offer three million residents of the former colony a path to British citizenship.

Liu also said said on Monday that the UK would have to bear the consequences of treating China as a hostile country when deciding whether to allow Huawei to be involved in the U.K.'s telecommunications network.

Zhao also spoke about France's own consideration of Huawei, calling on the country to be open and fair to Chinese companies, including the telecommunications company. The statement came after the French cybersecurity agency ANSSI said there would not be a total ban on using equipment from Huawei in the rollout of the French 5G telecoms network, but that it was pushing French telcoms to avoid switching to the Chinese company.
