Hong Kong police arrest media tycoon Jimmy Lai, raid newsroom under new Chinese security law

CA, 10 Aug 2020
Hong Kong police escorted media tycoon Jimmy Lai, arrested early on Monday, through the newsroom of his Apple Daily newspaper as around 200 officers searched the offices of the tabloid publication and removed boxes of what they said was evidence. The action marked the first time the law was used against news media, stoking fears that authorities are suppressing press freedom.

Apple Daily, an anti-government and pro-democracy tabloid that also does investigative work, posted on its Facebook page a Livestream of police officers roaming through its newsroom and rifling through files. It also reported that Lai, an ardent critic of Beijing, had been taken from his home early on Monday.

Two days after Chinese and Hong Kong officials shrugged off sanctions imposed on them by the U.S., the moves showed China’s determination to enforce the new law and curb dissent in the semi-autonomous city after months of massive pro-democracy demonstrations last year.
