Hong Kong Protests: Citizens vow to keep protesting on anniversary of major demonstration

CA, 13 Jun 2020
Hundreds gathered across Hong Kong, China on June 12 to mark the anniversary of a major protest that saw a turning point in the city's pro-democracy movement.

On June 12, 2019, protesters took over the streets around Hong Kong’s legislature to prevent lawmakers from entering to debate a controversial extradition bill. Officers use tear gas to disperse the crowds in what would become a common practice in the months that followed.

The extradition bill was later suspended and abandoned by Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

Protests have continued, however, focused now on a national security law that opponents say erodes democratic freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kongers since the 1997 British handover.
