Hong Kong protests continue as first person charged under China's new security law

CA, 06 Jul 2020
Dozens of demonstrators participated in a pro-democracy protest on Monday, raising blank pieces of white paper to avoid slogans banned under China's national security law, as a Hong Kong resident was charged with "with inciting separatism and terrorism" under the new security law for allegedly driving a motorcycle into police at a protest while carrying a banner with political slogans that are now banned.

The sweeping legislation punishes crimes related to secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, with punishments of up to life in prison.

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong also spoke out against the new national security law in Hong Kong on Monday before a court appearance related to a protest last year outside the police headquarters.

"The national security law is not only targeting a small group of people. It's affecting the daily life of Hong Kongers," Wong told reporters, adding that he believed the new law was encouraging censorship in public libraries.
