Hospital waiting lists hit record high for routine treatment in England

BBC, 11 Sep 2020
Hospital waiting lists for routine operations and treatments in England are now at a record high.

More than two million people are having to wait more than 18 weeks to be seen - and more than 80,000 are having to wait for more than a year.

The sharp rise in waiting times shows the serious impact that the coronavirus pandemic is having on the NHS. Almost all non-urgent surgery - such as hip and knee replacements - was stopped in March to make more space for Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile France has recorded its highest number of new coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic. While Scotland has introduced new tougher restrictions on social gatherings.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by health editor Hugh Pym and Scotland correspondent Lorna Gordon.
