How a widespread ban of TikTok in the U.S. could impact Canadian content creators
CA, 27 Mar 2023
U.S. lawmakers grilled TikTok’s CEO this week, just days after the government threatened to ban the popular app over security concerns. TikTok is already restricted on government-issued phones in that country, but this new ban would be widespread.
TikTok has been dogged by claims that Chinese ownership means user data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government or that it could be used to promote narratives favourable to the country’s Communist leaders.
Some experts say the risks being flagged are not exclusive to TikTok and warn that a ban of the app could cut off many content creators who depend on the app for their income. And as Alicia Draus reports, that would also have an impact on creators in Canada.
