How women have led the way in the coronavirus crisis

Telegraph, 06 Aug 2020
Women leaders have led the way in their response to the coronavirus crisis thanks to a range of undervalued skills.

That’s the assessment of many experts, including academics Uma Kambhampati and Supriya Garikipati.

“They’ve had brilliant communication skills,” said Ms Kambhampati. “With the ability to get across to their citizens that this is important and we need to do this properly.”

For Dr Garikipati, women leaders were better at explaining the detail of their Covid-19 strategy “without some of the bravado we have seen from some of the male leaders”.

Claire Cohen, who heads up Telegraph Women, agrees.

“Women do traditionally take on the majority of the organisation at home, the emotional labour, and we do have those soft skills - such as listening, collaboration, empathy - and quite often they’re skills that don’t come into the workplace,” she said.
