Georgia’s newly-elected Democratic Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock were sworn into the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, along with Alex Padilla, California’s former secretary of state, who takes over Vice-President Kamala Harris’ senate seat.

Harris laughed as she announced the certificate of appointment for Perdilla, saying “yeah, that was very weird.”

Ossoff and Warnock defeated their Republican opponents, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, in Georgia’s Jan. 15 runoff elections.

Perdilla is California’s first latino senator and was selected by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the vacant seat left behind by Harris’ resignation on Monday.
