India army chief "very sure" talks can resolve border row with China

CA, 04 Sep 2020
India's army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Friday he was "very sure" that the ongoing stand-off with China over a disputed border region in the western Himalayas could be resolved through talks.

"We are very sure that through this medium of talks, whatever differences we have will be resolved and we will ensure that the status quo is not changed and we are able to safeguard our interests," Naravane told local media during a visit to the Ladakh region, where troops from the two nuclear-armed countries have been squaring off for months.

He added that the current situation along the Line of Actual Control remains "slightly tense" and that the Indian army has made some "precautionary deployments" along the area.

Tensions between the two armies in the freezing snow deserts of the Ladakh region have been running high for months. In June, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting with Chinese troops in the nearby Galwan valley, the neighbours' most serious military clash in more than half a century.

China has accused the Indian side of crossing the de facto border and provoking its soldiers.
