Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party has suffered a significant setback in a key state election in West Bengal on May 2, 2021. Aggressive campaigning by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the poll was blamed for accelerating the country’s ferocious second wave of coronavirus infections. On the day of the election, India reported 3,689 deaths from Covid-19, the nation’s highest daily death toll since the pandemic began. The previous day India set a world record of more than 400,000 daily new cases.
