Indian residents, army veterans protest against China after deadly border clash

CA, 17 Jun 2020
Protesters in India burned effigies of Chinese President Xi Jinping and called for boycotts on products from China on Wednesday after a deadly clash between troops at a disputed border site in the western Himalayas that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.

In Patna, protesters burned an effigy of Jinping and called for a "surgical strike" on China. In Kanpur, protesters burned television sets and called for a boycott on Chinese goods. In Varanasi, residents protested and paid tribute to the killed soldiers.

China's foreign ministry confirmed there had been a "violent physical confrontation" on Monday in the border area but made no mention of casualties despite India's foreign ministry saying there had been deaths on both sides.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also called for an all-party meeting on Friday to discuss the situation after the confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
