In Portland, federal forces are being tasked with the defence of key federal buildings. As Black Lives Matter protests entered their 56th day running, the presence of federal authorities triggered a constitutional crises with local power pinned up against the president's orders.
The Telegraph's US reporter Laurence Dodds went along to one of the protests on the evening the Mayor of Portland decided to join in to see first-hand what the conflict was like on the ground.
