International Women's Day: Thousands of women around the world march for equal rights

CA, 09 Mar 2021
Marking International Women’s Day, women around the world marched to denounce injustices and call for more rights and equality.

Joining hundreds of women in Istanbul to protest China's treatment of Uighurs on Monday, Nursiman Abdurasit tearfully recalled her jailed mother in Xinjiang, fearing that Uighurs like her in Turkey may one day be sent back under an extradition deal.

U.N. experts estimate at least 1 million Uighurs and other Muslims are held in detention centres in northwest China's Xinjiang region. The United States said in January China had committed "genocide and crimes against humanity" by repressing Uighurs.

French associations and unions marched in the centre of Paris, calling for a day of "feminist strikes" and rallies, to denounce the injustices suffered by women.

Protesters also called on women suffering from domestic abuse put in particularly difficult positions during the pandemic, especially during the two lockdowns, to be helped.

German lawyer and former member of the German Islamic Conference Seyran Ates founded a nontraditional female-led mosque in Berlin, calling for equality. For International Women’s Day, she wishes for a “free and self-dominated life for all women.”
