Is Britain ready for a cycling revolution?

Telegraph, 06 Jul 2020
With restrictions on public transport, Britons are being urged to get on their bikes. But is the UK ready for a cycling revolution?

Dr William Oliver Norman, the walking and cycling commissioner, certainly believes we are.

“On an average day in London, there are about 740-750,000 journeys a day by bike... but we think there's the potential for 10 times as much,” he said.

“We know that during the lockdown, the amount of cycling has actually increased in lots of areas of London. Some of our counters are showing three times more cycling than normal.

“Lots of people cycling around are families, a variety of different people. The demand is there.”

But a cycling revolution will only happen if cyclists feel safe, and Victoria Young’s experience shows exactly why cycling is exhilarating - but can also be very scary.
