'It's horrible!': First people leave quarantine hotels after 10-night stay

At nine o’clock on Friday morning, Wagner and Elaine Araujo will step outside for the second time in 10 days. The couple have been in isolation since flying back from Brazil last Monday, when they were among the first returning UK residents to be required by law to spend 10 nights in a quarantine hotel.

The occasional supervised walk was permitted, but they couldn’t afford to risk it until they had taken their final Covid test. Producing a positive result at the end of their stay would mean they’d be forced to fork out another £1,750 for a further 10 days.

Desperate to get home to their four children and return to work, they bedded down for the long haul.
