The Italian Coast Guard worked for hours on Sunday trying to free a sperm whale tangled in an abandoned fishing net off the coast of the Aeolian Islands.

The footage released shows a diver using a knife to cut pink netting which completely covered the agitated whale.

The coast guard said that the whale was first reported by boaters who spotted it in difficulty on July 18, the coast guard teams monitored the animal overnight, and biologists joined the operation to free the whale on July 19.

They're still working on trying to free the 30-foot whale.

This marks the second time in less than a month that divers have intervened to free a sperm whale from a fishing net.
