A Japanese coastal town has spent over 25 million yen (US$229,000) of the coronavirus relief money it received from the government on a giant squid statue. Noto government officials said they hoped the sculpture helps promote the local seafood speciality and boost tourism to their community in Ishikawa Prefecture. The town was awarded 800 million yen (US$7.3 million) as part of a government aid programme aimed at boosting local economies amid the pandemic, local media reported. Construction of the pink cephalopod, which cost a total of 30 million yen, began in October 2020 and the finished piece was set up at its new home in March 2021.
