Former U.S. President George W. Bush was one of three former presidents in attendance at the funeral for civil rights leader John Lewis on Thursday, and shared personal memories about the late congressman, saying Lewis insisted that "hate and fear had to be answered with love and hope."

"John Lewis believed in the Lord, he believed in humanity and he believed in America," Bush said.

The funeral for Lewis was held at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, capping off a six-day celebration of life honouring the congressman.

Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80.
