John Lewis funeral: Politicians, officials pay respects to late civil rights icon
CA, 31 Jul 2020
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rev. Dr. Bernice King were among many dignitaries who gave tribute to the late congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis at his funeral on Thursday.
Dr. King, CEO of the King Center and the daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., lead mourners in prayer, telling them that Lewis “fought for true peace" in his life.
Three former presidents, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, also joined in the ceremony after nearly a week of mourning that took Lewis from his birthplace in Alabama to the nation’s capital of Washington to his final resting place in his home of Atlanta.
Pelosi said during her eulogy that Lewis “nonviolently insisted on the truth,” and that he “always was about a more perfect union.”
Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80.
