Juneteenth: Marches held across the U.S. to commemorate end to slavery
CA, 20 Jun 2020
Marches were held in cities across the United States on Friday to commemorate Juneteenth, the day in 1865 that slaves in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers told enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Tx., that the civil war had ended and they were free.
The Emancipation Proclamation had freed enslaved people in the South in 1863, but was not enforced in many places until after the end of the Civil War in 1865.
