Khmer Rouge prison commander Duch dies at age of 77

Al Jazeera, 02 Sep 2020
Comrade Duch, the Khmer Rouge executioner who killed thousands of Cambodians in the 1970s, has died aged 77.
Duch, whose real name was Kaing Guek Eav, was serving a life sentence for atrocities committed as the head of the Tuol Sleng prison.
He oversaw the mass murder of at least 14,000 Cambodians.
Kaing Guek Eav was the first commander of the genocidal regime to be convicted of crimes against humanity back in 2010.
Up to two million people are believed to have been killed, worked to death or died of starvation during the Khmer Rouge’s 1975 to 1979 bloody reign in Cambodia.
During his trial, Duch apologised for the horrors at the prison he controlled, claimed that he was a junior officer following orders.
He was serving a life sentence at Kandal Provincial Prison when he died.
