Looters damage property in Chicago, more than 100 arrested
CA, 11 Aug 2020
Hundreds of people looted Chicago's Magnificent Mile commercial district early Monday, smashing windows and clashing with police for hours including at least one exchange of gunfire, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing police.
Chicago’s police chief said there will be a heavy police presence in the city until further notice, while Mayor Lori Lightfoot told reporters that those responsible for the violence will be held accountable.
“We are already at work and finding you, and we intend to hold you accountable for your actions,” she said. “There is no justification for criminal behavior, ever."
Police Superintendent David Brown said at least 13 officers were injured, and a security guard and a civilian were struck by gunfire.
The looting followed angry scenes in the city’s Englewood neighbourhood after police shot who they said was an armed suspect who had opened fire on officers in pursuit. The suspect and three officers were taken to hospital, police said.
