Barcelona fans were increasingly impatient and critical of Lionel Messi on Thursday as the future of the Argentine star at the club remained uncertain following a week that shocked supporters and the sports world by announcing he wanted to leave the Catalan club.

While some fans begged him to stay, others described his current behaviour as ungentlemanly and accused him of playing with their feelings as they follow every twist and turn in the ongoing negotiations.

Lionel Messi's father and agent, Jorge Messi, met Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday to discuss the player's wish to leave the club but the talks ended in stalemate, Spanish media reported.

On Thursday, Jorge appeared to leave the door open to the possibility Messi may stay at Barcelona.

"I don't know," he replied when a reporter asked him if he would consider extending his son's stay for another year.
