Singapore Zoo is welcoming the birth of Simba, a lion cub born after he was conceived through assisted reproduction, a first for the city state. Named after the main character in the iconic Disney film The Lion King, Simba was born in October 2020 and made his public debut at the zoo in January 2021. Veterinary surgeons used semen extracted from an elderly African lion for the artificial insemination procedure. Simba is now being cared for by his mother Kayla and zookeepers.
