Mendicino makes announcement on foreign election interference | LIVE

CA, 10 Mar 2023
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino is due to make an announcement on the government's efforts "to protect Canadians against foreign influence" on Thursday in Ottawa.

The announcement comes days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his government's multipronged approach to combatting foreign election interference, including additional independent investigations and further steps to establishing a foreign agents registry.

However, none of the steps unveiled on Monday included a public inquiry, which opposition leaders had signalled was the only method of investigation they would support. Instead, the decision on whether or not to call such an inquiry will be made by an independent, special rapporteur.

Trudeau also tasked Mendicino with launching public consultations on setting up a new public registry for agents who work on behalf of foreign states, similar to ones established in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
