‘Merkel is the heroine who saved my life’: refugee who took selfie

In 2015, Syrian refugee Anas Modamani took a selfie with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a Berlin migrant shelter. It captured a symbolic moment when Merkel gambled her political capital and welcomed 1 million unscreened migrants, for which Syrians like Modamani remain grateful.
