Migrants protest outside UNHCR facilities in Libya to demand their evacuation
CA, 11 Oct 2021
Hundreds of migrants and refugees on Sunday gathered outside United Nations facilities in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, to demand they be evacuated from the country.
Migrants say they have faced violent abuse and extortion in a country that has had little peace for decades, but has become a major transit hub for people seeking to reach Europe in search of a better life.
Armed forces began a series of mass arrests in early October, detaining more than 5,000 people in overcrowded detention centres as aid and human rights groups voiced alarm.
On Friday, guards in one centre killed at least six migrants as the overcrowding led to chaos, the United Nations migration agency said.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) asked that people disperse from outside its facility so that they can help the most vulnerable, adding that they are ready to assist with humanitarian flights out of the country.
