CA, 03 Jul 2020
RCMP in Ottawa on Friday updated media on the investigation into the recent trespassing incident at Rideau Hall.
Deputy Commissioner Mike Duheme made a statement and answered questions, recognizing that information sharing is limited at this time as the investigation continues.
According to RCMP, the man taken into police custody following an “armed” incident on the grounds of Rideau Hall early Thursday morning is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Sources tell Global News that the suspect was a member of the Canadian Rangers, a group of reservists responsible for patrolling Canada’s North.
The suspect was in court on Friday morning, with charges are expected to be laid later in the day.
Sources also say the man had multiple firearms — one rifle and two shotguns — and that he told police he did not want to hurt them or anyone there. The man had one of the firearms in his hand when he was arrested, the sources said.
The investigation is ongoing.
