Miller says he respects First Nations groups’ opposition to Line 5 despite “difference of opinion”

CA, 13 May 2021
Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller on Wednesday said he “respects” the opinion of First Nations groups, like the Anishinabek Nation, that oppose the Line 5 pipeline, but said the government has a “difference of opinion.”

Miller went on to say his ministry would continue to “engage” with Indigenous communities on the issue of Line 5 and other issues that impact them.

The pipeline, which serves as a vital artery for North America’s energy infrastructure, is facing a looming shutdown threat from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who set a Wednesday deadline last November that owner Enbridge has no plans to meet.
