Minnesota governor says police reforms about safety, not defunding services
CA, 12 Jun 2020
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other civic leaders spoke Thursday about a legislative package being put forward on police reform.
Walz stressed that some aspects of the package were about public safety and that people need to not "get trapped" on the idea of defunding police. He said they want to see crimes reduced and ensure people are safe in their communities.
The governor said each community's model for public safety will "look different."
One of the proposals for alternatives to policing include having community-based violence intervenors who would intercept violence and reduce interactions with police.
The announcement of new police reforms comes after the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis. Floyd died of asphyxiation as a result of a white police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. Floyd’s death sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality.
