Mitt Romney says he supports Senate vote on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee

CA, 23 Sep 2020
Republican Sen. Mitt Romney said Tuesday he supports Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision to hold a vote on U.S. President Trump’s nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

When asked about his decision, Romney said he “came down on the side of the Constitution and precedent.”

Romney echoed McConnell’s comments on the Senate floor in saying that “more often than not, the Senate does not confirm” when the president and Senate are of opposing parties, adding that the chamber typically does confirm when both are of the same party.

He said the 2016 decision not to vote on former president Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, was “consistent” with history.

Romney said his vote on the nominee would be based on their qualifications.
