A powerful earthquake that struck near the Afghan city of Khost is now known to have killed at least 1,000 people and injured more than 1,500 others. The casualty toll is expected to grow as information trickles in from remote mountain villages where the quake struck early on June 22, 2022. The earthquake was measured at magnitude 6.1 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre and 5.9 by the US Geological Survey, and was located about 44km (27 miles) from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border. The Taliban, which seized control of the country last year, has asked for international help.
