Motive unclear after police officer, suspect killed following vehicle ramming US Capitol checkpoint

CA, 03 Apr 2021
One U.S. Capitol police officer died from their injuries and another was injured after a vehicle rammed a checkpoint outside the Capitol building on Friday afternoon. The attack does not appear to be terrorism-related, police said, but no further information is available. A motive remains unclear.

The suspect was also killed after officers opened fire after providing verbal warnings, while the suspect lunged at officers.

“The suspect did start lunging towards U.S. Capitol police officers at which time U.S. Capitol police officers fired upon the suspect. At this time, the suspect has been pronounced deceased,” Yogananda Pittman, acting chief of the U.S. Capitol Police said.

“This has been an extremely difficult time for U.S. Capitol police after the events of Jan. 6,” she added.
