An intruder broke into the home of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and used a hammer to "violently assault" her husband, police say.

US media said the suspect shouted "Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?" during the attack.

David Depape, 42, has been named as the suspect.

Medics say Paul Pelosi, 82, is expected to make a full recovery.
