New Brunswick Liberals pull out of stability talks, premier won't commit to calling election
CA, 15 Aug 2020
New Brunswick Liberal Leader Kevin Vickers said on Friday that the party had rejected Premier Blaine Higgs’ proposal to keep his government in power for the next two years, or until the COVID-19 pandemic had been declared over. Vickers said that talks over the past several days were akin to having a gun held to the party's head.
Vickers did add that his party would remain committed to its promise not to bring the government down until March 31, 2021 as they do not want to hold an election during a pandemic and it would be up to the premier to call for an election.
Only about an hour after Vickers' comments, Higgs spoke with reporters and would not commit to calling a provincial election in the next 48 hours.
The premier would not say if he would consider an agreement with the People's Alliance and Green Party to maintain the minority government, but said the Liberals would still spend "every waking hour' trying to defeat the government even though the opposition party doesn't have enough votes to do so. He said he will be thinking over the weekend what the next steps should be.
